Walter van Praag, an ambassador for Cystic Fibrosis Australia, born with CF himself, is at it again. This time van Praag, 47 y/o in July, is planning a 5,000 km ride from Vietnam to Singapore to continue raising international awareness for Cystic Fibrosis. The ride is dubbed Viet2Sing and is done under the banner of Coughing4CF, the name van Praag uses for his adventures.

Walter, himself from Turners Beach Tasmania, compiled a team of dedicated friends to cycle with him. The rotating support team of 5 consists of people from Canberra, Perth, Adelaide, Canberra, Brisbane, Port Moresby (PNG) and Revelstoke (Canada)! Together they will create history by attempting to cycle 5000kms through Asia on 200 Watt electric bicycles.

Queensland-based ZOCO Electric Bikes came on board as a sponsor by supplying 4 Zoco Rossa electrically assisted bicycles, and Vinacrete (a subsidiary of Australia's Jacon Technologies) offered to supply a support vehicle for the first 3 weeks, and the ball is rolling! Still in need of lots of support, the team has booked their flights and training, preparation and fundraising is in full swing with two fund-raisers in the planning.

Walter's challenges will not only be to find power to charge two batteries per day for each of the four bicycles, he will also need to keep healthy and pedal hard to make the electrically assisted bicycle ride 100kms+ per day. Walter will also swallow 1500+ pills, nebulise, do a couple of hours of daily therapy and regularly inject insulin during the epic ride. Cycling 5000kms across Asia with CF will require a certain determination that few people can muster.

During the 2 months ride there will be an Everyday Hero website set up to donate to the CF Association of Australia for which the team aim to raise $5K ($1 for each kilometer).

In 2007 Walter and a team of friends rode 4000+ kms from Paris to Istanbul across 10 European countries. This was made into a book and documentary called Coughing the Distance. Walter received CNN coverage and press in many countries, culminating in an Order of Australia Medal for raising worldwide community awareness for Cystic Fibrosis.   He was also named one of the Top 20 Faces of Australian Cycling by the Australian Cyclist magazine!
