Growing numbers of people are viewing bed and breakfast accommodation as worth paying a little extra for, according to research carried out on behalf of B+B Weymouth.

While a majority of people still view B&B accommodation as ‘cheap and cheerful’, and many still associate B&Bs with ‘eggs and sausage’, increasing numbers claim they would pay more for ‘boutique’ accommodation.

Nearly 1 in 5 surveyed said that they would be happy to pay a bit extra for a luxury bed and breakfast, showing that the distinction between a hotel and a B&B is becoming ever more blurred. However, in these cash-strapped times, cost is very much an issue, and few were willing to pay more than £50 per night for B&B accommodation, proving that B&B owners still have much to do.

Interestingly, people aged 55 were the most likely to splash out on luxury B&B lodgings, with 1 in 3 saying that a little more goes a long way. Men were also more likely to pay extra for boutique accommodation, while a majority of women said they would be on the lookout for ‘cheap and cheerful’ rooms.

Those aged between 16 and 34 complained about B&B owners who ‘talked too much at breakfast’ – not a problem, seemingly, for the over-55s!

“People expect value from a B&B” said B+B Weymouth manager Emma Carter, “but we’ve found that they’re willing to pay a little extra if, as a B&B owner, you give them a lot more. The days of dodgy carpets and soggy toast are well and truly over – when people search online for bed and breakfasts these days, they’re likely to find modern décor, boutique-style accommodation and great food.

“These days, people can stay in bland, identikit hotel rooms for very little, but many are choosing to find something individual, in a more central location,” she continued. “It’s all about the memories you create, and people are finding that a boutique B&B really can be a great place to stay.”
